About Department

  Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a branch of dentistry which deals with Surgical procedures carried out in the oral cavity (mouth) and maxillofacial (jaws and face) areas in order to improve function, appearance and/or to correct defects, repair injuries, or treat diseases. The conditions that Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons care for include removal of impacted teeth, management of injuries to the facial skeleton following trauma (due to accidents/assaults/animal attacks/sports injuries etc), placement of osseointegrated dental implants, correction of dentofacial deformities (misaligned jaws), congenital and acquired defects of the face, disorders of the temporomandibular joints, removal benign and malignant pathologies (cancer) of head and neck region as well as reconstruction of the defects created further to such disease elimination and also cosmetic or aesthetic surgery involving the face.
The department has full strength highly qualified staff as per national and International standards, recognized by Dental council of India.
The Undergraduate training starts from 3 rd Year BDS onwards, and is guided by faculty for basic exodontia and some minor surgical procedures after appropriate allotment. The department offers a postgraduate program in the specialty of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery with the intake capacity of two postgraduate students per year. The postgraduate students are extensively trained according to the syllabus prescribed by the DCI and MUHS, Nashik in both clinics and Academic. For this continuated education programs are conducted in association and guidance from Association of Maxillofacial Surgeons of India, Maharashtra university of Health Sciences, Nashik and DCI, New Delhi.
The department includes 40 dental chairs in toto, a Major Operation theater, a Minor Operation theater, UG and PG sections for Exodontia, a dedicated staff room, PG room and a departmental library.
Major OT section consists of a fully functional OT with boyles apparatus, Light sources, electrocautery and all the necessary equipments to carry out major OTs. Major OT in OMFS dept. is backed by an ICU unit, a recovery room and a 10 bedded day care in-patient ward.
The Department has collaboration with Punjabjrao Deshmukh Memorial Medical College and Hospital, Amravati and is involved in interdepartment interest such as surgeries involving Head and Neck Oncology, Cleft Lip and Palate, Microvascular reconstruction of Jaw etc.
In the Minor OT Section all the minor surgicals are performed which includes all the Transalveolar extractions, Impacted third molar removal, biopsies, IMF with arch bar fixation, IMF screw placement, Implant placement, etc
All the exodontias are performed in UG and PG sections of the department as per the allotment to PGs or UGs by concerned faculty.
